And now for something completely different. I don't even remember the last time I did a still life. My old still life area got relegated to storage when we had some long term company... never quite got it back again. I've been kicking the idea of building a cart that would give me a portable solution for a while. Anyway, I happened upon an oddly tall microwave cart at Target the other day... turns out it's just about perfect. I have a few modifications in mind. But for $30 and a 5 minute set up I'm not complaining!

Went to the Cubs home opener again this year. Yet another cold rainy day... But a good time none the less. Managed to catch a few great shots of the fans in the bleachers during batting practice. I'm hoping to be able to piece together a few larger compositions from them eventually. But for today I selected this gentleman for a quick sketch.

Daily Painting #173 -- Expression De Boy 2

Another expression for you today. Chased this one for a little while. I'm not sure if it was just the hint of baby fat in his cheeks, or what... But getting a feel for the muscle movement around the mouth and the slight raise of the eyebrows took a little tinkering. It was tricky getting the perspective to read true in the mouth too. I'm used to having more than a sliver of upper lip to play off of. I think that's what keeps the Expressions so interesting... I always seem to pick up something.

Yet another Thresholds piece for you today. A bit of a different take on a piece from a while back "Dawn". Let a bit more light and air in for this composition. I really enjoyed working on this one, the backlighting and cool highlights were fun to capture. Every thing just came together on the first pass, almost felt effortless. Shame every day can't go like that!

Daily Painting #170 -- The Portal

Been a while folks! I've been meaning to post a bunch of paintings for a while now. We're just starting to creep out of winter here the last few weeks. Left me with a case of cabin fever! Odd how much I missed the sun this year. I guess I don't winter as well as I used to.

I'm finally managing to wrangle my self back down to earth and back the computer. Hope you'll enjoy this piece. Really just a chance occurence. I pass this running out to the garage on drink runs all the time. Never caught the light quite like this. Probably wouldn't have even noticed if someone hadn't left the recycling bin right in my path... their idea of a subtle hint I guess.

I just couldn't pass up that glowing bit of color amidst all the grays! Painting this one was a bit of an exercise in humility too. It would have been so easy to loose the overall feel of the light in all the clutter.

Daily Painting #169 -- Mather Home and a Pochade!

Another winter night scene for you today. Unfortunately, I can never catch this one with snow. They're so quick to clear the snow! It's at a retirement community... might have a little to do with it? Either way, the reflections and lighting more than make up for it! Just a great scene!

I sort of hit a rut the last little bit. Really needed a change of pace. So I took a few days off from the easel. Here's the result... A new pochade box! (About 12 x7" made from a wine box) I keep meaning to do more sketching in the field, but the thought of lugging my supplies around usually puts me off or keeps me close to the car. With a little luck this will help break the cycle. Have to admit I really enjoyed building this. I don't have a router, so I had to get a bit creative to get the mast to work. But it was really refreshing to think in different terms. Cant wait to get it dirty!

Daily Painting #168 -- Thresholds Study 5

Hope every one in the Midwest weathered the storm safely. As we've been spending an inordinate amount of time indoors this week, it seemed an appropriate time to post this one. I'd been thinking about doing a few door studies to add in the mix.

While likely not a final composition, this was nice as a bit of a refresher. It's been a while since I did a still life, or anything with such shallow space. Definitely an interesting exercise.

Daily Painting #167 -- Thresholds Sketch 4

Been down with an evil cold the last little bit. Finally starting to feel human again! Good news is it gave me some extra time to paint. For the first time in ages, I'm actually a few paintings ahead! A couple are real gems too! Stay tuned....

Another Thresholds sketch for you today. The color on this one was alot of fun. Don't know if you'll be able to see it in the picture... The shadows had this wonderful blue cast to them while not reading blue. Took a bit of work to capture, but it really gave the piece a bit of "air".

Another Thresholds study for you today. I had alot of fun with this one! Got a bit tight in places at this size... but it's fun to push yourself every now and again. Adjusted some of the shapes to allow for a little more extension and repetition. Really helped the overall geometry and movement work together a bit more. All in all, fun stuff! Shapes abound!

Another Threshold piece for you today. Decided to push the color a bit on this one. I really like the way it turned out. I added some burnt sienna to the mix as it approached shadow, and it really vibrates! A bit more of a narrative in this one too. But I'll leave that to you.

Daily Painting #164 -- Thresholds Study

This is a study for the Thresholds series. I've been wanting to add some smaller pieces into the mix for a while. Some subtle, quiet, empty spaces. Happened upon this late the other night. New it could carry, but the handling would be the key. So I built this one up very slowly. Keeping the dark passages fairly transparent, building up a bit more in the lights. I also pulled back on the darks and worked in some real subtle temperature shifts to solidify the planes.

I don't think I've done anything this subtle in a single session before... let alone at this size. Don't think I'll be parting with this one right away... But I couldn't resist at least posting it.

Daily Painting #163 -- Under The Bridge and Demo

Another Winter night scene for you today... with a little demo to boot. I had a blast with this one, it's just so rich! Hope you'll enjoy it to. As always thanks for looking!

This will just be a quick walkthrough as I need dinner! If you have any questions or feel like I missed something, feel free to drop me a line. On to the meat and potatoes...

Step 1 - A quick brush drawing, about a minute. I used a little turp on this one to make the fluid curves a bit easier to grab.

Step 2 - Blocking in the darks. Most of these areas will just be "lost". It's not often you get to loose a whole structure!

Step 3 - Hitting some of the secondary shadow areas. Just big flat shapes for now...

Step 4 - The turning edges and a bit more refinement of the bridge...

Step 5 - The Color! I've been itching to hit this for a while. Not often I get to slap pure Cad red in the middle of a composition! I kept my mixture really loose for the lighter area of the pavement. It adds variety while minimizing the work later on. Hard to see, but I darkened the sky and slapped some sky color in next to the darks in the pavement.

Step 6 - The light and glare.... and a few other fun little details to give it some character. Take note of the range of temperature in the reflection from the street lights. Very important little details...

Another quick crowd study for you today. This was from a concert a Wrigley Field earlier this year. What a wonderful backdrop for a show! This is a small portion of the larger compositon I've been playing with. I don't normally get this abstract with my work, but the lighting really gave me a free pass.

Channeled a little "Ted" on this one. Fun stuff!

Well, winter is upon us. We haven't had much snow so far this year. But, it felt like the right time to step back into the winter night scenes. I always have fun with these. Really liked the lighting in this one.

Might just come back to this soon. One of my references for this piece caught a sharp breeze coming through. It cast a wonderful tranparent glow across the screen. Haven't quite figured out how to manage the paint quality for it yet... Definitley something I'd like to play with!

Well folks, I'm finally starting to find time to sketch again these last few weeks. Been focusing most of my attention on crowds and figures. It's always a wonderful way to find "weight" in my figures again. Really helps me get a feel for perspective and a sense of focus too.

This one really caught my eye the other day. Love the contrast in it. Almost pure silhouettes against the space. I tried to stay loose and really hit the big shapes in this one. I think it came out quite nicely in the end. Fun stuff! Anyway, enough of my rambling, I'll leave the rest up to you.

Been a while folks. I've had a few things to attend to these last few months. Summer always tends to be a crazy time of year... This one more so than most. I'm glad to say it's slowly winding down.

As much as I hate to hold on to moments like this. There was something uniquely human in this pose. Sometimes when the world gets heavy, it's time to take a breath... gather your thoughts, and pick it all back up again.

Daily Painting #153 -- Ghost

Feeling out another piece for the Thresholds series. This will probably be a rather large painting. I was really only concerned with the idea. So I worked this up mostly from memory...really just let it run off on it's own. One thing that really stuck with me was how the light fell over the texture of the walls. I ended up going back in with a dry brush to create an almost stippled texture in portions of the wall. The slight shadows it created really brought things to life. I'll leave the rest up to you.

This is a quick sketch for a painting I've been planning. I'm happy to say that I'm finally getting things pinned down on this one. This group of figures will be the secondary focus, so I wanted to see what detail was really necessary to hold things together. It was refreshing to loosen up and work things up in a more sculptural way.

Another Spectator piece for you today. This one was particularly interesting. It was set in the corner, and as the glass turned, it created an aerial perspective type change in the color and value of the stands. I guess it makes sense that as the angle changed it's thickness would increase and thus have an effect...but it's not something I'd ever taken note of before. Sometimes it's the little things that really keep painting exciting for me. Fun stuff!

And now for something completely different... I've been toying with the idea of taking the spectator series indoor for a while. Though I have to say I was a bit intimidated by the stadium setting. Not as difficult as I thought it would be...just took a little patience and some basic perspective. My favorite part on this piece was blurring all my work on the stands to bring the glass into view. It was frightening at first, but really pulled it all together.

A quick sketch to end the week. Yet another piece from the Thresholds series. I started the large version of this a week or so ago. Things were coming together nicely, but the drama just wasn't there. I thought the flourescent lighting might be the culprit....So I grabbed a panel and let the paint fly! Problem solved. This is a world more inviting. Now I just have to work up the courage to attack the big one with the same zest.

A few feet to the left for today's piece. Looses a little of the mystery. But I think the lighting more than makes up for it. I really enjoy the contrast between the warm foreground and cool background. Made for some really interesting color too. Sort of a side note...But I love that window. With out it as a point of reference, it would be like a time capsule down there. It's a little thing I guess, but it makes a world of difference!

Another self portrait in "a" studio. This is my work area in the basement...Where all the large pieces come to life. This space came to be in a rather odd way. I originally purchased this easel to replace the one up in my normal studio. Sadly it's too tall to fit in the room. Having been rather expensive, I couldn't bring my self to cut it down to size. So it now finds it's home poking through the drop ceiling in the basement. Turned out to be a nice quiet space to work. Though, I've learned to always measure first. ;o)

I was mainly after the contrast when I was setting up for this one....Only to find a surprising amount of color bouncing around. I decided to run with it, and really push the color on this one. I don't normally work like this, but in the end, I think it came out really well. Definitely some wonderful shapes and contrast. Just all around fun stuff! I hope you'll enjoy it too. Whew! This was a big painting in a little package! It occured to me that I haven't done a self portrait in a while. I really wanted to do something on a larger scope this time around. Here's a view of me in my studio. For the artists out there, I'm actually not right handed... Just have some heavy lifting to do to get a large enough mirror in place. ;o)

There was a little glare on the left of the panel when I shot this. I hope you'll be able to see past it. Sadly, I was unable to capture the true color from other angles.

Here's Barb. AKA, Grandma. I've only drawn her one other time, so this was alot of fun. It's always nice to explore a new face. It really forces you to pay attention. I could almost hear her greeting me while working on this... "Well hello dear." I had a blast with the crisp planes while blocking this one in. I ended up softening the flesh as I went so I could work in a little more color. But decided to keep things free and bold in the hair and drapery. In the end, I think it made for a nice contrast. Fun stuff!

We had a very heavy snow the other day. I actually cleared the drive four times! Inches every time! I don't remember the last time we had that much snow. The snow blower isn't working, so it was all done with shovel. Needless to say, I didn't have the energy to cook... so I hit the drive through. I happened across this set of tracks taking the back way in. The light really caught my eye. I hope you'll enjoy it too.

Another night scene for you today. This was a strange one. This place doesn't exist. I sat down to paint another image entirely, but it got away from me pretty quickly. Out of frustration, I wiped off the entire right side of the panel. A bit drastic, I know. After a short break I improvised the building and a few other things and it came right back together. To my surprise, it actually turned out to be alot more effective. Sometimes the risk will work out!

This one was tricky! Definitely an exercise in subtlety. A little back story, we finally had some snow the other night. I went to the park hoping to find some interesting light play at the pool. Turns out the pool doesn't exist anymore? News to me. It's now a construction site full of trailers and other heavy machinery. Which would have been fun if they'd left the lights in. While leaving, I noticed the tracks in the snow you see here. I wasn't sure how it'd would translate, but thought I'd give it a go. Thanks for looking. More soon.

Another night scene for you today. This one really got me thinking. My main interest with this series is the light and space. Finding spaces that create a feeling or story. But while working on this, I was really drawn to a few of it's technical obstables. The color in the "whites" was impressive to say the least. I was really drawn to the texture in the tire tracks too. I don't quite know how to explain it. But so much of painting is problem solving...this one certainly left me with a few new questions...

Daily Painting #129 -- Branson Dam

This was fun! A few "spectators" watching the opening of a dam in Branson, MO. Apparently this was the first time it had been opened for some time. I was impressed by the raw power of the scene. The silhouettes of the figures against the stark white water. The contrast in scale is reminiscent of Charles Sheeler's paintings of the Industrial Revolution. Try as I might, I was unable to find a decent image gallery to include here. But I encourage you to look into his work if you are unfamiliar. Fun stuff! Hope everyone had a wonderful Halloween! Daily Painting #128 -- My Sphinx

Here's Jazz again in her morning post... Playing Sphinx. She'll usually sit up there and take it all in while I have my morning coffee. When the weather's nice, I'll open the window so she can take in all the scents too. I think I'll be doing a large version of this for myself. Daily Painting #127 -- Guest Room

This is a study for another piece in the Thresholds series. I pass the "guest room" every day leaving the studio. The light always intrigues me, yet I've never painted it before. I've always been surprised how much the character of the room can change through out the day. After a week of rain, the contrast really caught my eye. The temperature in the color was especially interesting in this one.

Sort of a side note, my Grandfather made most of the furniture in this room. I'm not sure about the chair off hand. But I've always loved the bed and table. There are so many wonderful little touches that give them real character. A great way to start the week! More soon. Thanks for looking!

Another spectator piece for you today. I have to admit, I was a little intimidated when I drew this one up....alot to handle in such a small space. But, once I got moving, it went quite smoothly! Another "Spectator" piece for you today. A couple of gentlemen talking after the game. This was a fun subject, but a very odd process for me. I started this one a little over a week ago...but was called away. I came back to it a few days ago, and just wasn't in the right frame of mind. Sometimes it's tough for me to get back into a painting once I've set it aside. I found it calling to me this morning...So here it is completed on round 3!

Another Spectator piece for you today. These two, were in a world of their own. As goes for most of the kids that attend the games. They'll always round up in little groups regardless of which team their parents came to support. No judgement at all, just someone to pass the time with. It's refreshing to watch!

Another Spectator piece for you today. This young woman was taking a break from the sun between halves. This was a deceptively tricky piece. I ended up pulling out a few old beat up bristle brushes for this one. As it turned out, they were exactly what I needed to get the feel of the grass in the foreground. Something a bit different for you today...well for that matter different for me too. A few weeks ago, I stayed to watch part of a game that followed ours. Late in the game, the sun started to dip behind a bank of trees. It cast an intersting glow across the field right onto this gentleman. Something about the contrast really grabbed me. Anyway, I hope you'll enjoy it.

On a side note, it was alot of fun to animate the figures in the background...Just a couple quick strokes, and it felt as if something had just occured. Thanks for looking!

Been a while! Hope you'll forgive me...Sort of lost the mystery for a little while. It doesn't happen often, but I just hit a wall. Anyway, I'm back on the horse so to speak, with a new piece for you today!

This is a sketch for a new piece in the Thresholds series I've been working on for what feels like forever. I have to say I had a blast with this. I really had to fight my nature to keep this one fresh and loose. It would have been so easy to get lost in the details. In the end, I think the feeling of light really came through. Daily Painting #118 -- On Patrol

I met this horse just after the Cubs home opener. It was a terribly cold and wet day. Really just an awful day for baseball...Especially to be in the stands. Hurrying to get out of the cold, I came through a large crowd of people, and there he was! Just staring right back at me. It really took me by surprise. I knew immediately it would be a painting.

We were asked to paint a piece about Mothers today. This is one of the few times I've talked my Mom into sitting for me. It was a few years back, right around the holidays. She'd probably feel it is a bit unflattering. But I think I caught a glimpse of something in that gaze. I don't really know how to define it. But I'll take a bit of psychological drama over flattery any day. For me, this has always been a very special piece. Thanks for looking!

Another "Expression" for you today. This one was alot of fun. The color was particularly interesting for me. There were some really odd blues and purples in the shadow side. They just didn't look right on the palette, but really brought life to the flesh. It's weird how that happens sometimes.

Yet another expression for you today. I thought this would be a nice way to ease back into work for the week. As it turned out, this was the trickiest of the bunch so far. The tilt and twist of the head got me at first. But the difference in the eyes and a slight shift in the jaw turned out to really hold the essence of the pose. I'd like to do a few more of these over the next week or two. But I'll probably cap this series off at 10. As always thanks for looking!

We were asked to paint something "Out of the box" or out of the ordinary for us today. So I decided to paint one of my favorite geckos in a made up landscape. Sadly, I haven't settled on a name for this beautiful girl yet. Though I am certainly open to suggestions. She is a Nephrurus (Underwoodisaurus) Milii, which is a small terrestrial gecko native to Australia. They are a joy to keep, wonderfully friendly with very curious personalities.

Another Expression for you today. This one was particularly interesting for me. There was some subtle forshortening going on around the chin. I didn't quite get it right away in the drawing stage... After a short break and a few altered lines, it just all came together! It's really surprising at times how the tiniest adjustment can make a huge difference.

I'll probably do another couple pieces with Tom over the next few weeks. I would like to try a few with a younger model some time soon too. It should make for an interesting contrast. Thanks for looking. Have a great weekend!

Daily Painting #103 -- A Last Glance

We were asked to paint self portraits today. I thought it would be a great opportunity to try out a new idea. I've been using all sorts of doorways in the "Thresholds" series I've been working on. Recently I've been intrigued by the abstract way that they divide the canvas. I was curious to see how it would play pared down to just the shapes. I really like how the door frames echo each other in this piece. I felt that it almost created a narrative on it's own making the figure seem caught in between two worlds. Thanks for looking!

Daily Painting #102 -- A Good Read

Something a bit different today. I was in an odd mood this morning, and really wanted to work on a painting that I've had sitting in my head for a couple of years. Well turns out I didn't have any appropriately sized canvas stretched. So I ended up searching the internet just trying to put off stretching a canvas. I happened upon a few sites that I haven't hit in ages (links below) looking at some of their demos. It got me thinking that I haven't really discussed my process at all on this blog....

So I thought I'd put together a little demo today. I'm no teacher mind you, but I hope you'll enjoy it anyway. So here goes nothing...

My initial reference -- Boy making a mess

Step 1 -- A quick sketch in unthinned Burnt Sienna with a dry brush. About 10-20 min max.

Step 2 -- A quick block in of the fleshtones, getting the color to work is really my only concern here.

Step 3 -- Continuing to block in the hair...still keeping it simple. I also softened and added a more finished feel to the flesh tones.

Step 4 -- Finally on to the clothes. Again keeping it really quick and simple...

Step 5 -- The finish...on to the background and fine tuning the little details. I used alot of the background color into the hair and dark areas of the clothes to pull things together a bit more. This helps to create an overall feeling of light in the piece too. Once everything was covered, I went back in and focused on creating some variety in the edges especially with the hair and clothes. Here's the finished piece at actual size.

My palette for this painting was pretty limited but included : Titanium White, Cadmium Yellow Light, Yellow Ochre, Cadmium Red Light, Alizarin Crimson, Burnt Sienna, Burnt Umber, Cerulean Blue Hue and finally Ivory Black. I'll probably take the demo down in a few days, but I hope those of you that see this will enjoy it. If I've left anything out, or you have any questions, don't hesitate to drop me a line. Here's Jazz at her evening post. Come five every night, she starts guarding the stairs waiting for people to return from work. Personally, I think she's just waiting for food. Anyway, the last year or so, she won't actually venture down until she's absolutely positive someone's home. Then she lets the puppy in her out! I guess she's getting older, but it's interesting to see how she adapts to her new limits.

A little off topic, my 100th Daily Painting is on the horizon. Almost hard to believe! I'd like to make this one special, so I thought I'd ask you what you'd like to see. If there's something you've been missing or waiting for drop me a line, and we'll see ;o)

Yet another character from the Cubs game. It's been nice to have some new faces to explore lately. I loved the backlighting on this gentleman. The contrast was wonderful. It gave me the opportunity to loosen up and use some bold strokes. The ambient light created some wonderful temperature shifts and grays in the skin. Some of the colors I wouldn't normaly use on flesh, but they really brought some blood and life through the grays.

This was a wonderful joy to work on. This man was actually an usher at a Cubs game recently. Initially, I had planned on painting him in that context. But as I began the drawing for this piece, I felt the need to isolate him. As the day went, he began to take on another identity entirely! I kept picturing him as an old fisherman down to his yellow waders. He began to have such a wonderful aura, that I just had to run with it. I really can't explain it, but sometimes paintings just take on a direction of their own. What fun!

Daily Painting #94 -- Coffee!

I really needed a change of scenery today. I've been doing nothing but drawing the last few weeks. Really needed a change of pace. I figured a still life would be a nice way to spice things up a bit. Especially considering, I haven't painted a still life in over a year! After a little cleaning, I threw on some music, and quickly found myself completely immersed in the objects. It was a wonderful break from the phone, daytime tv and all the other distractions I usually contend with. I had forgotten how peaceful it can be down there. Actually found a cd I've been looking for forever too! It was a nice morning.

Just a quick side note. I will be posting some paintings on ebay at slightly discounted starting prices over the next few weeks. Just for a change of pace. So be sure to take a look. Who knows, I may slip a few surprises in over there too!

Daily Painting #90 -- What Next?

There's a mirror right behind my study easel, that's typically covered in layers of references for one painting or another. Most of the pictures or sketches don't come down till the tape wears out. I happened to take a bunch down the other day, and was left with this staring back at me. It struck me that I must take this pose countless times a day. Either trying to gain perspective on a piece, or find a new one out there somewhere. Anyway, it seemed like a fitting way to start the week. Thanks for looking.

I went to watch a friend's son play baseball this weekend. It was definitely a strange experience, it almost felt like a window to my past. I had a great time watching the kids. As their attention span disappeared, you'd find them in the strangest positions. They gave me a bunch of great references.

Wow! It's been a while since I've posted. Life has been crazy! I've had so many different projects going that dailies just got lost in the shuffle. I've really missed them too!

I've been doing a ton of drawing lately to get ideas organized for some large pieces. In storing them, I came across this older watercolor that I wanted to show you. Watercolor has been a pet project of mine for a few years. I took a life drawing class a while ago as a refresher, and the teacher had us attempt to work in the style of other artists. I originally painted this subject in the style of Andrew Wyeth. When the class had ended, I painted this piece because I didn't know how I would have handled it. As strange as it sounds, not being well versed in watercolor, I really couldn't see my way through it. When I stumbled across this the other day, the whole experience came flooding back. Just though I'd share. Thanks for looking.

This piece was a saga in the making. I must have drawn out five or six different backgrounds for it before I finally settled on this one. I had also planned for this to be part of the hat series, but it just didn't seem to work in the context of this piece. Sometimes it's surprising how much a painting changes over the course of a session. In the end, I'm really happy with it though.

Something a bit different today. I really loosened up on this one. With more to fit in the picture it was alot easier for me to not get caught up in the little stuff. This is a study for a larger painting. I've been tinkering with the drawing on this one for for a long time now. The blinds are a new addition that I think adds a good deal to the image. Thanks for looking.
